The Monument to the Discoveries stands on the bank of the river Tejo in Lisbon, capital of Portugal.

The Monument was commissioned by Portuguese President António de Oliveira Salazar for the Portuguese World Exhibition of 1940. The current concrete replica was inaugurated in 1960 as part of the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator.

Aléria is in the centre of the Plaine Orientale, also called the Plaine d'Aléria, the east-central coastal plain of the island facing Italy. It includes a number of villages and monuments. The commune of Aléria was created in 1824, but it did not truly begin to revive until after 1945, after the allies (chiefly American) had undertaken to eradicate malaria (1944). An organization, SOMIVAC (Société d'aménagement pour la mise en valeur de la Corse) was created in 1957 to resurrect agriculturally the entire eastern plain under government sponsorship. It had great success in developing the region. Meanwhile a massive archaeological effort had gotten underway in 1955.

Children can take donkey rides from Duke Humphrey Way, just in front of Blackheath Gate at the South end of Greenwich Park. See the Greenwich Park website for full details about the Park, including a map. Donkey rides are normally available during school holidays, bank holidays and at weekends from 10am to 5pm.

Blackheath Gate is also where part of the London Marathon starts from.

Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester (3 October 1390 – 23 February 1447) was the fourth and youngest son of Henry IV. After inheriting the manor of Greenwich, Gloucester enclosed Greenwich Park and from 1428 had a palace built there on the banks of the Thames, known as Bella Court and later as the Palace of Placentia. The Duke Humphrey Tower surmounting Greenwich Park was demolished in the 1660s and the site was chosen for building the Royal Observatory.

This image was created by taking a colour photo, overlaying a B&W copy on the original, and erasing areas to reveal through colour from underneath.

I took about 8 pictures in all before the shop owner stood in the middle of the doorway, and the second woman balancing the shot came walking in to the frame.

Walk down the hill to the square (Praca Luis de Camoes), and turn left on to Rua Garrett. This hill, facing down in to the commercial centre, has lots of pavement cafes / bars.
